Paul Aiken of CayConcerns

Now here’s a Blog of interest from a Mr Paul Aiken ..  a local realtor who is having his own problems with this so called “7 year Rollover” … I don’t intend to discuss it much more than  i already have on this blog .. but if you are curious at how much the caymanian rules are screwing up cayman and the caymanians .. then take a look here. I Must mention that I found this website from the Cayman Compass. It is definately becoming a hot topic around here and I am hoping that the rules do get changed in the next year so thatI can keep calling Cayman My home after having lived here for 7 years straight but since 1995 when i first came here! If I had not gone home to the UK after my first year of living here I would now have the right to apply for residency according to the current rules. Damn education .. it cost me the right to live in the place I call home according to the Caymanian Government .. funny how you get punished sometimes isn’t it !

Oh but funniest .. this Muppet still thinks he is right !

So in an unusual turn of affairs where by normally we have loads of famous people come and visit .. and most of them I couldn’t care less about .. one of my favourite actors turned out to be on island this last week .. may still be here and I would love to have a beer with him. Shame I have no idea where he is hanging out or what he is doing at night.

Hurricane Ernesto

Ernesto has the potential to be menacing but I doubt it is going to be more than rain, wind, and waves for us .. and a few days off for the toursim industry. Of course that means delayed shipping of produce, beer and the rest but the bars have enough. Personally I would like another big one .. say Cat 3 like Hurricane Michelle. Most of the people still on the island have been through enough hurricanes to tell the difference between real ones and play ones .. but since Hurricane Ivan which devastated us and sorted out the pansies from the real men most of us are a little bit more cautious than normal. Here’s to a good season and plenty of surf !
UPDATE:  as of 6am Ernesto is officially the Tropical Atlantics first hurricane. oh and now it’s missing us.

TD 5
Tropical Depression 5

So the season is really brewing up now … this could get exciting !
whoops Debby is over here .. it’s Ernesto coming our way .. just sounded better in the title !

gMail

Does anyone who reads this have a Gmail account … i’d really like an invite to go and check it out to see if I could use it for anything .. I am pretty sure it will come in handy. Either mail me or Buzz this post to let me know if you can invite me !

Edit : I got my account .. thank you !

There has been a lot of talk in the Cayman Islands about the Immigration Laws as they stand. If they remain the same I am not allowed to be here after next November 16th and NOT allowed to work here after next August 3rd.
There have been guesses that 80% of the expat workforce will be kicked off the island in the next year; this amounts to 12,000 to 15,000. Which coincidently is also the number of actually guestimated Indiginous Caymanians there are !

“I don’t know the numbers,” Mr Tibbetts said adding that he was hesitant to identifying absolute numbers for those to be affected by the rollover policy because some numbers may have to be subtracted from whichever number was identified.
from the Net News

I find it amazing that they have no real idea of how much of the workforce will be removed and yet they are willing to let it go ahead. It could cause economical meltdown of the tourism and financial industrys, which account for almost all of the economy on the island. Feel free to click through any of the links I have put in this article if you are interested to find out more, but it is quite frankly ridiculous and needs to be sorted out. There are 2 types of people you want on an island like this, locals who chose to remain here, and expats that chose to live here.
You can’t force locals to stay (Caymanians of any variety) so why force expats who want to remain to leave ? Business will find a natural balance of the workforce so you will never have too many people, and competition will always dignify that the right person was hired be it Caymanian or expat.
I have helped the tourism industry here for 7 years, I have helped rebuild the island after the devastating effects of Hurricane Ivan and yet I am apparently of as much importance as the cockroaches on the island. The Governement here and the Immigration rules need to get a grips of themselves, then slap themselves and then figure out a way to make this work right.

Baby Manatee in Cayman
Baby Manatee in Cayman

Just off the coast of West Bay a baby Manatee was found. There is no story of someone accidently killing the mother, and although that wouldn’t surprise me as there is no way a baby made it here all on it’s own at only 2 weeks old I am sure the killing of a Manatee would not have remained quiet around here. Theres not much internet news but it did make it to National ABC broadcast when it was airlifted from here to Florida. .
